To update to GarageBand for Mac (v10.0), install it from the Mac App Store. It is a new application and will not be in the Updates tab.
Existing sounds and loops will not be overwritten. Previous versions of GarageBand are placed in a sub-folder (named with the app version) in the Applications folder. For example, GarageBand 6.0.5 would placed in a folder of the same name. Both GarageBand for Mac (v10.0) and GarageBand 6.0.5 will be available under the Purchases tab in the Mac App Store if you want to reinstall.

GarageBand 6.0.5 is is a very good GarageBand version and the best you can get, if you missed to upgrade to the successor GarageBand 10, when it has been released in 2013 for MacOS 10.9 Mavericks. Since the introduction of the AppStore, we have to get the new versions, when they are released. I recently had to reinstall High Sierra on my old 2011 MacBook Pro and when I did this it deleted my copy of GarageBand. I tried redownloading my copy of 6.0.5 from the App Store but when I open and try to download the instruments and such it says it cannot finish installing.
